Six ways to increase your website traffic

These days having a business website is pretty standard procedure. And with the continuing evolution of the Internet it has never been easier to establish that all-important Web presence.

But a website isn’t going to be a profitable business tool without one vital element—traffic! Without traffic your website simply won’t have a chance to sell your products and services. So, what are some of the best ways to attract traffic to your website? Here are six to get you started:

1. Use keywords in your content

Keywords help you get found in searches so it makes sense to use them in your content. It’s important however, that you use them wisely.

Placing the same keyword or keyword phrase in every keyword sentence is just keyword silly because that keyword is going to make your keyword content sound too keyword full of keywords and that would be a real keyword turnoff to your keyword readers. (Get it?)

The bottom line is to always make sure your website content flows well and is easy to read while getting your message across.

2. Use keywords in your content headings

Again, this will help in searches. Breaking up your content with subheadings is also helpful in making your website easier on the eye. And, of course, relevant keywords should also be included in your subheadings.

3. Articles

There are several ways to use articles to raise your profile and gain traffic to your website:

  • Distribute them to article directories where they can be picked up by other people for use on websites, blogs and in ezines. (Heads up: make sure you include a resource box with your website details and short bio)
  • Place articles on your website or blog—this gives people more reason to visit and ‘stick around’. Also, search engines like updated content so it helps your page rankings.
  • Write articles for offline publications. Getting published in TRW (The Real World) can add ‘bucket loads’ to your expert status.

4. Connect with your target audience using Social Media

Twitter, Facebook and other social media can be effective marketing tools if used appropriately. Giving ‘no strings attached’ valuable information will help establish you as an expert and raise your profile in the marketplace. (Heads up: When using social media, don’t think: “What can I sell to them?” Rather, ask yourself: “What can I give to them?”)

5. Blogs

  • Post useful information on a blog attached to your website.
  • Post constructive comments on other blogs that share your target market, without being in direct competition. For example, a jewellery designer might post a comment on a fashion blog.  Include a link to your website in your posting profile.

6. Mainstream media

Never underestimate the power of the offline press. From current affairs programs to local newspapers, there’s always the need for an interesting story or authoritative comment.  Becoming known as the ‘go to’ authority in your field will generate loads of free publicity—including a big fat mention of your website.

Your website is your business’s doorway to the world. By using a few simple strategies you can open it wide then welcome your customers as they surf on in.
